Stride saw himself walking across a barren planet. In the distance were trees. Caves loomed all around him. He wasn’t alone. Someone walked beside him but he couldn’t see his face. Danger everywhere. Was this the end of the world? Did this world even exist? Mother.

“I will protect you.”

He heard himself laugh, harsh and bitter. “You’ve never protected me. You want to use me. You have no love for me. No mother has ever treated her son with as much contempt. You have killed everything I’ve ever loved. I can’t love anymore. I don’t wish to. ”

“You are weak, emotions inherited from your vampire father, someone who should know better. Until you embrace your full powers, you will never be free of that weakness.”

“Zero.” The name came to his lips quite naturally and he turned to see that Zero was the one walking beside him. He gasped and his eyes flew open. He sat up in bed and looked around him.

Zero’s face was close to his, eyes probing. “What is it?”

“It’s true,” Stride said, shaking his head. “We do know each other.”

“I told you that.”

“I saw you in a dream.”

Zero nodded. “Tomorrow you will be bitten.”

Stride looked pensive. “Can I alter the future?”

“I…maybe. Do you want to?”

Stride got out of bed. “If I can avoid being bitten…if I am prepared, then…” he looked at Zero, “the rest won’t happen.”

“Meaning?”

“I won’t succumb to the weakness of emotion.”

Zero stumbled off the bed. “You can’t mean that.”

“I won’t need to fall for the wolf and therefore experience the pain of loss.”

“That’s not it, Stride. I mean…I don’t want you to fall for the werewolf, but…you may have to. It’s what makes you realise that you can love. You won’t love me in the future otherwise or…”

“Stop your nonsense! Whatever happens can be changed. I will make sure of that. Now, go and clean something and leave me in peace.”
